Managing mining project documentation using human language technology

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to develop a system, which would enable efficient management and exploitation of documentation in electronic form, related to mining projects, with information retrieval and information extraction (IE) features, using various language resources and natural language processing. Design/methodology/approach The system is designed to integrate textual, lexical, semantic and terminological resources, enabling advanced document search and extraction of information. These resources are integ… Show more

“…Documentation plays an important role in a mining safety management system. It enables efficient management and exploitation of documentation related to mining projects, enabling information retrieval and extraction using natural language processing techniques (29). Comprehensive safety documents are required to ensure proper construction and compliance with mine use guidelines for a specific purpose (30).…”

“…A computational procedure to identify emerging topics in periodical materials was proposed and tested in the context of the gallery, library, archive and museum institutions (Candela and Carrasco, 2021). Text-based entity extraction and information retrieval from publications were also applied in engineering (a mining project) (Tomašević et al , 2018), materials science (Zhao et al , 2021) and in the nuclear domain using 120 documents retrieved from the Scopus database (Desul et al , 2019). Techniques were proposed for extracting tables and figures (Clark and Diwala, 2015; Wei et al , 2006) and free text descriptors of images (Lin et al , 2008).…”

“…In the cultural heritage textual context (interviews), a methodology for automatic annotation of a multimedia collection of intangible cultural heritage was proposed (Tanasijević and Pavlović-Lažetić, 2020). Text-based entity relation extraction research also addressed unique challenges associated with extending knowledge from a single language context to a cross-lingual context (Mahmood et al , 2019; Tomašević et al , 2018; Yu et al , 2021).…”

“…The monolingual corpus of texts from the mining domain and related research work, which comprised 172 documents (in Serbian) with 2.7 million words in first release [31], was subsequently enlarged with 63 documents. The current version has 4.1 million words, covering project documentation (26%), legislation (11%), doctoral dissertations (31%), textbooks and other mining literature (32%).…”
