Managing online creativity for improving innovation performance

Abstract: Purpose -Building on the socio-cultural theory and the climate literature, the purpose of this paper is to examine: how to effectively manage computer-mediated platforms to improve innovation performance, and which types of computer-mediated platforms firms should be more involved with. Design/methodology/approach -The multivariate mediated regression method and relative effect analysis were employed to test the model. “…In the other research, radical and incremental innovation performance are shown to be affected by the online creative atmosphere as well as crowd engagement. Novelty behavior and interaction between firms lead to radical innovation, whereas meaningful behavior and interaction between consumers lead to incremental innovation (Tien and Cheng, 2017). Therefore, these circumstances are formulated into hypothesis 4 as follow:…”

“…Although they do not directly engage in the innovation process, they need to evaluate user-generated innovations and adopt valuable ones to commercialize (Nambisan and Nambisan, 2008). Besides, firms deploy multiple support strategies and establish creative climates to promote user innovation (Tien and Cheng, 2017). For example, many firms provide users with innovation toolkits to support their innovation activities (Von Hippel and Katz, 2002).…”

“…When developers perceive the platform’s open policies, the developers are encouraged to show beneficial behaviors for platforms. For example, Tien and Cheng (2017) show that as developers perceive platforms’ policies for stimulating innovations, platforms can build creative climates among users. Likewise, perceived open policies might contribute to establish favorable climates to knowledge sharing among developers.…”
