“…The observed mangrove woody species of both Aceh (22 species) and Peninsular Malaysia (13 species) is lower than the record by Spalding et al Malaysia has 38 exclusive, 57 non-exclusive and nine associate mangrove species 33 , while Indonesia has 52 species of trees, 21 species of shrubs, seven species of palms and many species of other plant habit. 34 The species loss is predicted as combine impact of human and natural disturbance, such as conversion and heavy harvesting of mangroves as well as tsunami and earthquake catastrophes occurred in the areas.…”

However, the mangroves in SW and on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in general, are not so diverse and widely distributed as compared to the west coast because the former are exposed to the lagoons and rivers ( Latiff and Faridah-Hanum 2014 ), and are also threatened by strong waves during monsoon months as well as anthropogenic activities e.g., many mangroves in SW had been uprooted to make way for aquaculture, shrimp ponds and constructions of infrastructures.…”

“…Biodiversity conservation is a not stated objective of the current management of MMFR, yet, the working plan for the MMFR reported the richness and diversity of the bird community, and the relevance of MMFR for supporting migratory birds (Ariffin and Nik Mohd Shah, 2013;Latiff andFaridah-Hanum, 2014, 2014). However, there is no monitoring system for bird populations established in MMFR, for example.…”
