Mannan‐Binding Lectin in Children with Chronic Gastritis

Abstract: The involvement of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) insufficiency in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis (CG) in children was investigated. Blood samples were collected from 78 paediatric patients suffering from CG associated with Helicobacter pylori infection (group Hp þ ) and from 41 with the disease not associated with such an infection (group Hp -). Control group consisted of 77 children. The frequency of mbl-2 gene mutations and serum protein concentrations did not differ significantly in both groups as comp… Show more

“…The same genotype also seems to be associated with developing gastric cancer in patients 65 years of age or younger. Mannan-binding lectin is believed to play essential roles in H. pylori-induced gastritis [13] and carcinogenesis [14,15]. Our results may be partially explained by altered inflammatory responses in the gastric mucosa against H. pylori or by altered immune defenses against tumor progression.…”

“…Up-regulated mucosal expression of MBL has recently been reported in patients with H. pylori gastritis [13]. Two other recent publications report a possible association of MBL2 haplotype and susceptibility to H. pylori infection as well as the risk of gastric cancer [14,15].…”

“…Previous studies have shown that the O allele is associated with a risk of developing more severe gastric mucosal atrophy and intestinal metaplasia in Helicobacter pylori infected individuals [51]. Other studies have shown that the O allele is not linked to chronic gastritis, dyspepsia, duodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis (UC) and/or Chron's disease [52][53][54][55][56]. The cause behind the high gastrointestinal inflammatory symptoms among O/O genotypes in our study and the role of MBL in upper gastrointestinal immunity remains unclear.…”
