Manning roughness coefficient in vegetated open channels

Abstract: Manning equation is one of the most common equations used in estimating the mean velocity and discharge in open channels. The equation depends on some measured hydraulic parameters as water surface slope and hydraulic radius of open channel cross-section in addition to the Manning roughness coefficient. Estimating the value of Manning`s roughness coefficient is dependent on the nature of the channel, the number of obstacles that resist the channel flow and the field engineers experience. In vegetated channels,… Show more

“…The particle size of the bed material has significant effects on the Manning roughness coefficient. In general, as particle size expands, Manning's roughness coefficient decreases ([ 42 , 45 , [46] , [73] , [74] , [75] , [76] , [77] ]; Salah Abd Elmoaty & T. A., 2020; [ 25 ]). The real effect of the bed on the coefficient of discharge would remain intangible as long as existing calculations are not modified to reflect the aggregate size.…”

“…Vegetation density significantly affects the overall flow behaviour in the vegetated Y‐shaped confluence (Gran & Paola, 2001). The vegetation density was demonstrated as the dominant parameter that influences Manning's roughness coefficient ( n ) within the vegetated channel (Salah Abd Elmoaty & El‐Samman, 2020). The flexible vegetation density (200 items/m 2 ) is larger than that in the previous similar studies such as 10–90 (Li et al, 2014), 35–84 (Lacy & Wyllie‐Echeverria, 2011), 12 (Liu et al, 2013) items/m 2 .…”
