Words that have a number of related senses are polysemous. For example, paper refers to both a substance and a publication printed on that substance. Five experiments investigated whether different senses are represented distinctly in the lexicon or if there is a common, core meaning. In all experiments, a polysemous word was used twice, in phrases that selected the same or different senses. Experiment 1 showed that sense consistency aided memory for the polysemous word. Experiment 2 extended this result to a timed sensicality judgment task. Experiment 3 demonstrated that the effects for polysemous words were very similar to those for homonyms. Experiment 4 ruled out the possibility of modifier-modifier priming. Experiment 5 showed that sense consistency facilitates comprehension relative to a neutral baseline, while sense inconsistency inhibits comprehension. These experiments provide evidence that polysemous words have separate representations for each sense and that any core meaning is minimal.

La manera como se confeccionan los diccionarios se ha visto afectada en gran medida en los últimos años por cuestiones diversas, como la irrupción de las nuevas tecnologías en las sociedades actuales o la voluntad decidida de algunos lexicógrafos de aplicar a aquellas obras de consulta, en la medida de lo posible, los relevantes avances que se han producido en los últimos años en el ámbito de la Lingüística. resumo: O objetivo do presente artigo é demonstrar como tem evoluído a lexicografia, de uma atividade eminentemente prática a uma reflexão teórica sobre o dicionário. A primeira questão a ser discutida é o status da própria disciplina, se se considera, por exemplo, que há lexicógrafos, tais como Atkins; Rundell (2008), que negam a existência de uma teoria lexicográfica. Em segundo lugar, e assumindo que há -e há -uma reflexão teórica sobre o dicionário, serão apresentados os principais avanços na área, a partir da árdua discussão em torno da classificação de dicionários, passando pelos critérios para estabelecer o universo léxico que constitui a listagem dos dicionários (macroestrutura), o conjunto de informações que se oferece em cada verbete (microestrutura), o sistema de remissões (medioestrutura) e, finalmente, o estado em que se encontra a discussão sobre os componentes externos do dicionário Palavras-chave: Metalexicografia. PrESEnt AnD FuturE in lExiCogrAPhyAbstract: The purpose of this lecture is to demonstrate the evolution of lexicography from the practical task of compiling dictionaries to their theoretical approach as reference works. The first issue to be discussed is the status of the discipline itself, since there are lexicographers, like Atkins; Rundell (2008), that deny the existence of a lexicographic theory.
