Manufacturer encroachment on a closed‐loop supply chain with design for remanufacturing

Abstract: This paper examines the manufacturer encroachment on both forward and reverse flows of a closed‐loop supply chain with two different design for remanufacturing (DfRem) approaches. We show that both DfRem approaches lead to Pareto improving encroachments under certain conditions. Design for modularity (DfM) compensates for the retailer's encroachment loss through dual positive spillover effects via lower wholesale price and higher buyback price to selling and collecting activities. Design for durability (DfD) s… Show more

“…Regarding the product modular design, Kim and Kim (2019) study the impact of the product modular design on the internal cannibalization between the OEM's new and remanufactured products. Hu et al (2022) consider two different designs for remanufacturing that are design for modularity and design for durability and then explore the impacts of these designs on the manufacturer encroachment on both forward and reverse flows of a closed-loop supply chain. Wu (2013) explores the impact of the product modular design on the external competition between the manufacturer's new and remanufacturer's remanufactured products.…”

“…With the development of Internet, there are more and more researches on the structure of cross‐channel, multi‐channel, and omni‐channel supply chain (Hu et al, 2022; Verhoef et al, 2015). Beck and Rygl (2015) classified multi‐channel, cross‐channel, and omni‐channel retailing through literature review and proposed that multi‐channel retailing where consumers can shop across channels at any time and any place is usually called omni‐channel retailing.…”

“…The recent development of e‐commerce and logistics industries has revolutionized supply chains' distribution channel patterns (Chiang et al, 2003; Hu et al, 2022). An increasing number of manufacturers are introducing online direct channels while retaining traditional retail channels, referred to as manufacturer encroachment (Tsay & Agrawal, 2009).…”
