Manufacturing of Aerospace Parts with Diffusion Bonding Technology

Abstract: The objective of this study is to manufacture aerospace components with diffusion bonding technology. Examples produced with this technology consist of thin-sheet diffusion bonding and massive diffusion bonding. The mechanism of diffusion bonding process was presented with schematic microstructure development. Aerospace parts include titanium tanks and a scaled combustion chamber with bonded steel and copper. The microstructure of bonded region shows no indication of heterogeneous phases at interface. It is sh… Show more

“…Diffusion bonding stands out among various joining techniques due to its minimal temperature gradient in the joint in comparison to other methods. Elimination of a heat-affected zone (HAZ) and highly complex microstructure from non-equilibrium phase transformation and chemical segregation during melting is possible via solid-state diffusion bonding, which makes it a lucrative option to be employed for joining in different industrial sectors like aerospace [45][46][47][48][49], fusion reactor concepts [3,[50][51][52][53][54], plate type heat exchangers and reactors [55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62], and so on [26].…”

“…Figure 2 provides a brief overview of the basic diffusion bonding process and the three reported parameters. Most notably these diffusion bonds are used for aerospace applications [15][16][17], production of plate type heat exchangers or chemical reactors [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] and fusion reactors [26][27][28]. The protective oxide layer on austenitic stainless steel [29] results in good corrosion resistance of the material and makes diffusion bonding it not a trivial manner.…”

“…For titanium, the passivation layer is soluble in the matrix material and diffusion welding of titanium is widely used, e.g., in the aerospace industry [18,19]. In Figure 16, a very good bond between thin micro-structured layers can be seen.…”
