Manufacturing productivity and energy efficiency: a stochastic efficiency frontier analysis

Abstract: SummaryThis paper presents a mathematical model to estimate both production frontier and energy demand frontier, and evaluate the energy efficiency in the automotive manufacturing sector using plant‐level production and utility consumption data. By using the stochastic frontier analysis, two models—an output efficiency model (production frontier) and an input efficiency model (energy demand frontier)—are developed to analyze the plant's energy efficiency performance relative to the ‘best practice’ among peers.… Show more

“…Therefore, many researchers have attempted to develop and use other efficiency indexes to measure energy efficiency. Recently, efficiency index measurements have used stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) using data from various countries [6][7][8][9]. Nonetheless, most previous research focused only on efficiency index scores and did not fully analyse their determinants.…”

“…Researchers have made significant attempt to determine an interaction mechanism between material supply and consumption, and product demand. Shui et al utilized the stochastic frontier analysis method to analyze the plant's energy efficiency performance and establish the relationship between inputs and the overall productivity . Dinh et al focused on introducing a generic approach using dynamic simulations that contributed significantly to the evaluation of new strategies and the prediction of the dynamic behavior of ethylene plants .…”

“…Lin and Wang used the excessive energy‐input stochastic frontier model to analyze the total factor EE and improve the energy conservation. Shui et al utilized the stochastic frontier analysis to analyze the plant's EE performance and understand the relationship between production inputs and the overall productivity. The stochastic frontier analysis approach is a fundamental method in modeling applications, but the superposition of measurement errors will influence the accuracy, and it is difficult to ascertain the specification of the error structure …”
