Manure combined with chemical fertilizer increases rice productivity by improving soil health, post-anthesis biomass yield, and nitrogen metabolism

Abstract: Excessive reliance on chemical fertilizer (CF) in conventional farming is a serious concern owing to its negative effects on soil health, the environment, and crop productivity. Organic manure is an alternative source of fertilizer to reduce the amount of CF usage in agriculture, decrease environmental pollution, and ensure sustainable crop production. This study assessed the integrated effect of poultry manure (PM) and cattle manure (CM) with CF on soil properties, plant physiology, and rice grain yield. Addi… Show more

“…The results of this study suggest that FYM alone can achieve significant improvement in yield traits compared to the control, thus reducing reliance on inorganic fertilizers, which is in agreement with [22]. [23] also found that a combination of cattle manure and chemical fertilizer had the potential to sustainably provide nutrients for an increase in rice yield and enhance soil health.…”

“…Organic manure derived from animal waste holds great promise, for maintaining soil health and fertility, protecting soil biodiversity, and improving crop production; organic fertilizers have a clear advantage over CFs in many aspects 13 15 . Organic fertilizer has greater organic matter and richer nutrient contents; it improves soil physicochemical and biological properties primarily by enhancing soil structure and reducing soil bulk density 16 18 .…”

“…However, the implementation of these approaches has limitations because they are labor-intensive and lack of advanced technology (Anadon et al 2016). In contrast to traditional synthetic N fertilization, organic fertilizers are considered effective and environmentally friendly alternative fertilizers to improve crop productivity and soil health (Iqbal et al, 2019;Iqbal., 2020a;Nkoa 2014). Seaweed extract (SE) is a bio-organic fertilizer derived from large algae in the ocean (Ullah et al 2008).…”
