A prim… Show more

“…This does not mean that habitats with forests were inhospitable to bivalves, but simply that the remaining forests were on mountains and/or nearby ecosystems, which is usually unsuitable for bivalves mainly because of the steep slopes and low nutrient levels. The lowland forests that previously occurred mainly in HR‐V, ‐VI, ‐IX and ‐X have largely been cleared for sugar cane and coffee crops (INEA, 2011; Moraes, 2012; Silva et al, 2018). The municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes (located in HR‐IX) had one of the largest areas of sugar cane cultivation in Brazil (Lamego, 1945), and a large portion of this crop remains (the largest purple area in Figure 5).…”

“…However, these networks mainly include the mountainous bioclimatic domain and some nearby areas (Ministério do Meio Ambiente – MMA, 2006; INEA, 2015; see also Figures 2 and 5), and thereby provide little support for bivalves. In areas important for bivalves, such as HR‐IX, as well as the northern portions of HR‐IV and HR‐VII, there are few protected areas (INEA, 2011; Silva et al, 2018). Upgrading the protection status of existing SU areas, such as APA da Lagoa de Cima (HR‐IX), to a stricter category could also be an effective way to protect both the species and the landscape (Dobler et al, 2019).…”
