Pastagens cultivadas e culturas agr… Show more

“…Models of occupation and land use in Cerrado have led to loss of more than 50% of the original vegetation of the biome (Sano et al 2008), bringing consequences such as soil degradation, increased invasive species and compromising the water cycles (Klink & Machado 2005), with the deforestation of Cerrado even affecting rainfall patterns and increasing the duration of the dry season in Amazon regions (Costa & Pires 2010). The observation that biomes are phylogenetically conserved (Crisp et al 2009) also implies that its evolutionary potential could be seriously compromised by environmental changes, so that ecological processes such as seed dispersal, which have strong links with the angiosperms phylogeny, could be dramatically affected by the decline in biodiversity, with whole clades being affected, not just species in particular, causing a break in the phylogeny of plants.…”

“…It covers practically the entire Midwest region, parts of the North, Northeast and Southeast regions and only 2% of the South region (Ribeiro & Walter 1998;Sano et al 2008). It contains about 30% of Brazil's biodiversity (Dias 1996) and is one of the most threatened biomes in the world (Mittermeier et al 2005).…”
