Mapping Aquifer Recharge Potential Zones (ARPZ) Using Integrated Geospatial and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in an Arid Region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: There is an urgent need to explore and analyze new aquifer recharge potential zones (ARPZ) in arid regions exposed mainlyto hard rock local aquifers, whether fractured or non-fractured, for investment and fulfillment of the Saudi Vision 2030. Over-pumping, seawater intrusion, climatological changes, population growth, lack of traditional water supplies, expensive desalinized water, and excessive evaporation have characterized the Duba region of Tabuk province of Saudi Arabia (SA). Aquifer productivity and pote… Show more

“…To begin an AHP analysis, one must first create a decision hierarchy that considers the decision's objective, criteria, and available choices [35]. The next step is to make a pairwise comparison matrix of the choice criteria [36,37] to figure out how important each factor is. Table 3 [38] uses a 1-5 scale to show how much more dominant one element is over another with a specific quality.…”

“…This method has the advantages of a clear structure, easy operation, and wide applicability [39]. It has been extensively applied in the fields of ecology, environment, and groundwater [40][41][42], such as environmental risk assessment [43][44][45], groundwater pollution risk assessment [38], groundwater potential assessment [46][47][48], and groundwater vulnerability assessment [49][50][51].…”

“…The need for readily available freshwater of adequate quality for drinking and other applications is growing substantially. Groundwater and surface water are worsening [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Water consumption and demand in the industrial, municipal, and agricultural sectors in SA have skyrocketed as a result of recent developments [7,8].…”
