Mapping cognitive and emotional networks in neurosurgical patients using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Neurosurgery has been at the forefront of a paradigm shift from a localizationist perspective to a network-based approach to brain mapping. Over the last 2 decades, we have seen dramatic improvements in the way we can image the human brain and noninvasively estimate the location of critical functional networks. In certain patients with brain tumors and epilepsy, intraoperative electrical stimulation has revealed direct links between these networks and their function. The focus of these techniques has r… Show more

“…Thus, rsFC has been used to characterize individuals' functional brain organization in patients with a broad range of neurosurgical diseases including GBM. Relatively recently, there were reports of significant alteration of brain functional connectivity in GBM ( 42 , 43 ). We, for the first time, directly tested the relationship of such changes with OS in GBM patients ( Figure 3 ).…”

“…Therefore, we suggest that hemispheric dominance and/or the strict requirements of handedness be taken into account in future studies. Moreover, we are seeing the application of various integrated neuroimaging methods such as structure MRI and resting-state fMRI (Catalino et al, 2020 ), which can map a more comprehensive cognitive and emotional network in neurosurgical patients and, potentially, enable the detection of both hemodynamic (blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal) and electrical sources of neural activity.…”

“…The fMRI scan will be measured by professional operators at the Affiliated People's Hospital of FJTCM using a 3.0 T signal MRI scanner (SIEMENS Healthcare, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) with a birdcage head coil. [50][51][52] Open access P300 recordings will be performed using a two-channel device (KEYPOINT, DANTES, Wirral, England). Auditory evoked potential P300 will be used to elicit ERP.…”
