It is discussed in this paper that map is both a tool of representation and design in architecture. However, it is mainly used as a tool of representation. But it becomes a tool of design by being instrumentalized during the architectural design process. Creative maps, therefore, emerge in architecture. These maps are discussed as mental, theoretical, formal, narrative, perceptional, imaginative, functional, indexical, relational and interactional maps in the paper. Mental maps enable urban and architectural space to be considered not only as physical but also mental designs in architecture. Theoretical maps reveal conceptual and formal codes of designs. Formal maps lead designs to be created through solid and void relations in the city. Narrative maps promote designs to be formed spatially by a sequence of narrations and events. Perceptional maps change the ways of perceiving and designing space. Imaginative maps enhance the imaginary effects of designs through effective and creative images. Functional maps pave the way for designs to be created by different relations between different functions. Indexical maps turn functional, formal or contextual relations into a sequence of data by using computer technologies. Relational maps indicate that there are various relations between the indexed data. Architectural designs are created due to these relations. And interactional maps are used as the tools to change the relations and relational designs accordingly. So, it is revealed in the paper that the conventional perspective on the maps restricted them to be only a tool of representation should change in architecture immediately. Maps become creative when they are used as the tools of representation and design in architecture.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
