Mapping human resource development: Visualizing the past, bridging the gaps, and moving toward the future

Abstract: Using topic mapping techniques, we provide a review of the 3,236 articles published in the five premier HRD journals between 1990 and 2019. We map the key terms evidencing the emergence of five major topic clusters within HRD scholarship: nature and identity of HRD, HRD interventions and outcomes, national HRD, career development, and HRD in academia. Nature and identity of HRD depicts a movement from establishing foundations to expanding horizons. HRD interventions and outcomes reflects a spectrum of research… Show more

“…A research domain arises from one or more academic fields that expand according to interests, themes, values, or conflicting points of view or values, with the academics involved moving toward specific sub-communities [ 47 , 48 ]. In order to demarcate the research domain on video game live streaming, we referred to previous studies that sought to explore the boundaries of specific thematic areas [ 49 ].…”

“…In order to demarcate the research domain on video game live streaming, we referred to previous studies that sought to explore the boundaries of specific thematic areas [ 49 ]. According to Shirmohammadi, Mehdiabadi, Beigi, and McLean [ 47 ], an initial approach entails asking four basic questions: what, how, who, and where? The answer to those questions contributes to a better understanding of the phenomenon and its main players.…”

“…Third, HRM and HRD have been approached as parallel, equally important academic fields. Thus, we unambiguously depart from a traditional subspecialized role of HRD (McLagan, 1989; Ruona, 2016; SHRM, 2014), and acknowledge that HRD has become a well‐established and mature field of research and practice (Seo et al, 2019; Shirmohammadi et al, 2020). Moreover, we offer a showcase example how HRD can additionally create transdisciplinary value (Jeung et al, 2011; Torraco, 2005a; Yoo et al, 2019) by developing and testing multilevel (1‐2‐1) research models.…”

“…The most distinctive and central keyword was "performance." Discussion about what constitutes the core identity of HRD in the articles has included (1) tension and balance between the learning and the performance paradigm (Han et al, 2017;Holton & Swanson, 2011); (2) the role of and call for more attention to development (Kuchinke, 2010); and (3) balanced success for individual-, group-, organization-, and system-level performance (Shirmohammadi et al, 2020). In our analysis, many keywords and almost all clusters appear together with the word performance, and the significant size of management in the same cluster and work from another cluster seem to indicate that scholars examined performance in both managerial and work contexts.…”
