Mapping Impervious Surface Distribution with Integration of SNNP VIIRS-DNB and MODIS NDVI Data

Abstract: Data from the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Line-scan System are often used to map impervious surface area (ISA) distribution at regional and global scales, but its coarse spatial resolution and data saturation produce high inaccuracy in ISA estimation. Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite's Day/Night Band (VIIRS-DNB) with its high spatial resolution and dynamic data range may provide new insights but has not been fully examine… Show more

“…This research aggregated the ISA results from the pixel level at a cell size of 30ˆ30 m to fractional values at a cell size of 1ˆ1 km to show clearly the ISA transition from the urban core to rural areas. This implies the necessity of developing fractional ISA distribution, especially when medium or coarse spatial resolution images are used for ISA mapping [17,36,60]. The availability of very high spatial resolution images such as QuickBird, Pleiades, and Worldview with half-meter spatial resolution provides a new platform for accurately producing ISA data, which can be used to calibrate the medium or coarse spatial resolution images [36,60].…”

“…Previous studies have recommended the NPP-VIIRS DNB for extracting urban extent at regional and continental scales [24,31]. The wider radiometric range and finer spatial resolution of NPP-VIIRS DNB provide an opportunity to obtain more detailed information about the urban extent.…”

“…Several indexes have been proposed to combine the advantages of both NPP-VIIRS DNB and MODIS NDVI features [31,48]. It has been proven that these indexes are effective on large-scale urban extent extraction.…”
