Mapping of actual and potential land suitability for oil palm in several land unit using geographic information system

Abstract: The suitability land of oil palm in North Sumatra Province is important, especially in the lands that are often planted by the community. This study aimed to map the actual and potential suitability of the land for oil palm in Sei Bingai Subdistrict, Langkat, North Sumatra, Indonesia under the different land unit. This research was conducted from March to June 2018. The survey method was conducted to collect soil samples in the field. Land suitability classification (LSC) was evaluated based on the matching me… Show more

“…Hence, potential land suitability for A. malaccensis in Peria-ria Village and Sari Laba Jahe Village could become S2rc (19.50 ha), S3rc (131.37 ha), S3rc,eh (1230.08 ha) and Nrc (212.45 ha) (Tabel 4 and Figure 6). Based on Table 4, there were no highly suitable (S1) classes were found in the area in accordance with the study research of Rahmawaty et al (2019b), Rahmawaty et al (2015).…”

“…Several researches have proved that GIS can be an impressive instrument for cataloging vegetation data obtained from ground surveys into mapping and analysis. For instance, Rahmawaty et al (2019b), Rahmawaty et al (2012), Harahap et al (2019) have been using GIS mapping of actual and potential land suitability for oil palm. Rahmawaty et al (2019c), have been using GIS for spatial analysis of Pinus merkusii land suitability.…”

“…Water availability and root-zone medium cannot be improved, but nutrient retention and erosion hazard can be. Therefore, the potential land suitability for Land Unit IV could become S2 wa rc, which is similar to previous works (Rahmawaty et al 2011;2019b;Harahap et al 2019). Improvement efforts cannot be made for wa as stated by Rahmawaty et al 2020a.…”

“…These results are also similar to land suitability study by Rahmawaty et al (2020c) for Hevea brasiliensis and Aquilaria malaccensis in North Sumatra. However, these differ with a study of land suitability for Pinus merkusii which shows that temperature (tc) and erosion hazard (eh) are the limiting factors (Rahmawaty et al 2019c) and while for oil palm (E. guineensis) the limiting factor was wa (Rahmawaty et al 2011(Rahmawaty et al , 2019bHarahap et al 2019). These differences indicate that each plant has different criteria for growth requirements.…”

“…Several studies about land suitability have conducted for some plants in several locations based on GIS (e.g. Rahmawaty et al 2019a;Rahmawaty et al 2019c;Rahmawaty et al 2019d;Harahap et al 2019;Parry et al 2018;Tarigan et al 2016;Rahmawaty et al 2016;Satriawan et al 2014;Rahmawaty et al 2012;Chuong 2007). Several approaches have been used to analyze the suitability of land (e.g.…”
