Mapping of the Temperature–Entropy Diagrams of van der Waals Fluids

Abstract: The shape of the temperature vs. specific entropy diagram of a working fluid is very important to understanding the behavior of fluid during the expansion phase of the organic Rankine cycle or similar processes. Traditional wet-dry-isentropic classifications of these materials are not sufficient; several materials remain unclassified or misclassified, while materials listed in the same class might show crucial differences. A novel classification, based on the characteristic points of the T–s diagrams was intro… Show more

“…Real refers to the fact that these classes have reverse S‐shaped saturated vapor lines; therefore, it is possible to have an isentropic “saturated vapor state to another saturated vapor state” transition with them, described in Section 3. Neither ACZM nor ACNZM fluids have been found so far 21,36 . Subjects of the current investigation are the “real” isentropic fluids when expansion is assumed to be reversible and adiabatic, but in later passages, wet fluids under real expansion conditions will also be studied.…”

“…A reservoir abandonment temperature of 120-140 • C was selected for the electricity generation analysis based on the operational binary cycle GPP of Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia; [60]). However, Organic Rankine Cycle using an optimized working fluid has helped to achieve favorable electricity generation from lower geothermal energy source of about 80 • C [61][62][63][64]135]. Although the efficiency of the GPP with such low heat source is lower than 10% [35], this can be advantageous for remote northern regions where deep drilling cost is high ($12 million USD for a 4-km-well; [37]).…”
