Mapping research on biochemistry education: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to map the research literature on Biochemistry education, covering the scientific production indexed on the Web of Science over the past 66 years. The open-source Bibliometrix R-package, an R-tool, was used to carry out the bibliometric analysis. Our results describe (1) how many articles were published per year and what is the annual average growth rate; (2) which are the core journals, authors, and publications in the field;(3) which countries and funding agencies contribute mos… Show more

“…The above journals accounted for 80.6% of the total number of publications. It is worth noting that a previous study has revealed a similar percentage; the authors found that these two journals published 71.8% of the papers in educational research of all grades of biochemistry courses, including K–12, undergraduate, and graduate biochemistry education …”

“…The data search strategy was as follows: ((TS = (biochemistry OR molecular biology)) AND TS = (education OR teaching OR learning OR course OR curriculum OR research)) AND TS = (undergraduate). Here, the abbreviation “TS” (topics) means that the search terms can be found in the literature’s title, abstract, or keywords . Since molecular biology has been regarded as a branch of undergraduate biochemistry, the term “molecular biology” was included as the descriptor.…”

“…Bibliometric analysis has been successfully applied in prior research in many disciplines, including in educational research (e.g., Aparicio et al, 2021; Assefa & Rorissa, 2013; Avila‐Garzon et al, 2021; Barbosa & Galembeck, 2022; Cividatti et al, 2021; Esen et al, 2020; Gómez‐Carrasco et al, 2022; Hallinger & Kulophas, 2020; Liu & Wang, 2019; Marín‐Marín et al, 2021; Ye et al, 2019). Thus, the use of this methodology is motivated by the gap in the literature so as to conduct comprehensive bibliographical analysis that adds a new contribution to prior studies by examining the progress and trends of STEM‐TPD educational research.…”

“…VOSviewer has functions to customise visualisations of data, and offers different high‐resolution outputs, including overlay and density visualisation (van Eck & Waltman, 2010, 2014). These two cutting‐edge bibliometric tools have been utilised in many recent bibliometric studies (e.g., Aparicio et al, 2021; Assefa & Rorissa, 2013; Avila‐Garzon et al, 2021; Barbosa & Galembeck, 2022; Cividatti et al, 2021; Esen et al, 2020; Gómez‐Carrasco et al, 2022; Hallinger & Kulophas, 2020; Liu & Wang, 2019; Marín‐Marín et al, 2021; Ye et al, 2019). Consequently, it was decided that these two reliable tools would be used to perform the bibliometric analysis.…”
