Mapping the Melatonin Suppression, Star Light and Induced Photosynthesis Indices with the LANcube

Abstract: Increased exposure to artificial light at night can affect human health including disruption of melatonin production and circadian rhythms which can extend to increased risks of hormonal cancers and other serious diseases. In addition, multiple negative impacts on fauna and flora are well documented, and it is a matter of fact that artificial light at night is a nuisance for ground-based astronomy. These impacts are frequently linked to the colour of the light or more specifically to its spectral content. Arti… Show more

“…That experiment will require the measurement of the irradiance on a set of sites for which we computed the Illumina v2 irradiance spectra. We are expecting to perform that experiment with the LANcube radiometer [46] in the coming year.…”

“…To determine the spectral type, we make use of the color ratios relatives to the green channel in order to determine the coordinate of the lighting device in a 3D color space defined by the red/green, blue/green and infrared/green color ratios (r/g, b/g and i/g). r, g, b and i are derived from the raw red, green, blue and clear (R,G,B,C) LANcube channels as explained in [8]. Basically, we first use the sum of the 3 colors and the clear channel to get an estimate of the near infrared (i).…”

“…Ideally, the measuring devices must be multispectral and multiangular. In the present work, we describe the use of such a sensor called LANcube [8].…”

“…It has been proved that the exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) can induce negative impacts on both biodiversity 1 , 2 and human health 3 , 4 . The emission of artificial light into the nocturnal environment induces harmful consequences on many nocturnal and diurnal species, like bats 5 , insects 6 , toads 7 , fishes 8 or birds 9 .…”
