Mapping the onset of psychosis: the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States

Abstract: In these preliminary investigations, the CAARMS displayed good to excellent concurrent, discriminant and predictive validity and excellent inter-rater reliability. The CAARMS instrument provides a useful platform for monitoring subthreshold psychotic symptoms for worsening into full-threshold psychotic disorder.

“…Patients' inclusion criteria were age between 14 and 40 years old and IQ ≥ 75. ARMS criteria were established by the Comprehensive Assessment of At‐Risk Mental States (CAARMS; 37) and/or the Schizophrenia Proneness Instrument‐Adult version (SPI‐A; 38). FEP patients met DSM‐IV‐TR criteria for any psychotic disorder or affective disorder with psychotic symptoms as established by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM‐IV (SCID‐I; 39).…”

“…Future studies should focus on subclinical psychotic symptoms in at-risk groups and HCs to cover the full range of the psychosis spectrum using other rating scales such as the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS) or the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS). 64,65 In addition, the relationship between salience, value and reward prediction signals is still a matter of intense debate. 3,53,66 However, our task design focused only on reward anticipation.…”

“…With the BSIP, a rating of the at-risk mental state as well as the transition criteria can be done, according to Yung et al [36]. The BSIP was developed based on these criteria around the same time as the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS) [41], using the same criteria, there is one difference in that a low-risk category with unspecific prodromal signs is also included.…”
