Dorsal fins, one of the most notable dolphin's physical features, play important kinematic and hydrodynamic roles and are related to physiological and environmental adaptation processes. Differences in dorsal fin shape have been recently associated with geographic variation, habitat specialization between ecotypes, and ontogenetic factors. We studied dorsal fin variation across several common bottlenose dolphin populations in the Caribbean. A total of 252 dorsal fin photographs from eight coastal regions in the Caribbean were selected for analysis. Dolphin dorsal fin proportions were compared among regions and compared with data previously collected from Holbox, Mexico. Dorsal fin models were constructed for each region. We found that across the Caribbean, coastal bottlenose dolphins exhibit low variation in dorsal fin shape, with the most common dorsal fin pattern having low and triangular shapes, two traits that greatly contrast with the oceanic ecotype. Also, significant differences in overall dorsal fin proportions found among some adjacent groups support the hypothesis that subgroups could be present even within extremely short geographical distances -as has been previously documented. The results of this study can be implemented in population monitoring efforts worldwide, as it uses free software and provides a step-by-step guideline to analyze the data.

The study of the cranial endocast provides valuable information to understand the behavior of an organism because it coordinates sensory information and motor functions. In this work, we describe for the first time the anatomy of the encephalon of an early Miocene pan-octodontoid caviomorph rodent (Prospaniomys priscus Ameghino, 1902) found in the Argentinean Patagonia, based on a virtual 3D endocast. This fossil rodent has an endocast morphology here considered ancestral for Pan-Octodontoidea and other South American caviomorph lineages, i.e., an encephalon with anteroposteriorly aligned elements, mesencephalon dorsally exposed, well-developed vermis of the cerebellum, and rhombic cerebral hemispheres with well-developed temporal lobes. Prospaniomys Ameghino, 1902 also has relatively small olfactory bulbs, large paraflocculi of the cerebellum, and low endocranial volume and degree of neocorticalization. Its encephalization quotient is low compared with Paleogene North American and European noncaviomorph rodents, but slightly higher than in several late early and late Miocene caviomorphs. Paleoneurological anatomical information supports the hypothesis that Prospaniomys was a generalist caviomorph rodent with terrestrial habits and enhanced low-frequency auditory specializations. The scarce paleoneurological information indicates that several endocast characters in caviomorph rodents could change with ecological pressures. This work sheds light on the anatomy and evolution of several paleoneurological aspects of this particular group of South American rodents.

The viral component of the gut microbiome has been poorly studied to date. Expanding knowledge about the role of the virome will make it possible to use it for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in the future. This article shows the effect of the antibiotic drug cefazolin and the coordination compound CC-195, used for the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus, on the diversity of viral taxa in the intestines of mice. The samples taken from the group the infected mice treated solely with cefazolin reflect a significant disturbance of the normal intestinal microbiota by the antibiotic therapy. The viromes of the infected mice treated with CC-195 either alone or together with cefazolin showed the closest similarity to the original virome in the negative control animals. So the coordination compound CC-195 is capable of stabilizing the intestinal virome (microflora) both when used with the antibiotic and on its own. Вирусная составляющая кишечного микробиома на сегодняшний день мало изучена. Расширение знаний о роли вирома позволит в будущем использовать его в лечебно-профилактических целях. В этой статье показано влияние антибиотика цефазолина и координационного соединения КС-195, используемых для лечения золотистого стафилококка, на разнообразие вирусных таксонов в кишечнике мышей. Образцы, полученные у группы инфицированных мышей, получавших только цефазолин, отражают значительное нарушение нормальной кишечной микробиоты в результате антибактериальной терапии. Виромы инфицированных мышей, получавших терапию КС-195 либо отдельно, либо вместе с цефазолином, показали сходство с исходным виромом у животных отрицательного контроля. Так, координационное соединение КС-195 способно стабилизировать кишечный виром (микрофлору) как при применении вместе с антибиотиком, так и самостоятельно.
