Mapping the University of Washington Quality of life questionnaire onto EQ‐5D and HUI‐3 indices in patients with head and neck cancer

Abstract: Background: There is no mechanism to predict health utility (HU) values from the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UWQoL) scores. We sought to develop a mapping algorithm capable of using UWQoL data to approximate HU scores. Methods: Outpatients with head and neck cancer completed the UWQoL, EQ-5D, and the Health Utilities Index-Mark 3 (HUI-3). Results of the UWQoL were mapped onto both EQ-5D and HUI-3 scores using ordinary least-squares regression models. Two-part models were explored. Th… Show more

“…To rectify the inappropriately low predicted variance, they went on to use real and simulated data sets to propose three methods to adjust their CIs. The second mapping algorithm specific for HNC patients was recently published by our group and uses the UWQoL responses to approximate EQ‐5D‐5L‐5L and HUI‐3 scores 14 . The reduced OLS model, converting UWQoL data into EQ‐5D‐5L scores, performed best (adjusted R 2 = .628, RMSE = 0.076) and again demonstrated construct validity by distinguishing between several indices of disease severity.…”

“…This approach has been generally accepted in cases where direct utility measurements are unavailable 10,11 . Over 200 mapping algorithms having been developed to date, although comparative literature mapping HNC disease‐specific quality of life responses onto health utilities has been scarce 9,12‐14 . In a recent publication, we described our experience deriving mapping algorithms for health economic evaluation, using the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire as a starting measure 14 .…”

“…Within head and neck cancer, limited work has derived HU values, and heterogeneity exists. [48][49][50][51] HUs for this study were drawn from both direct and indirect elicitation using various methods. 22,29,52 Given the sensitivity of the base case to the disutility of END, improving the quality of HUs would decrease uncertainty.…”
