Mapping the use of simulation in prehospital care – a literature review

Abstract: BackgroundHigh energy trauma is rare and, as a result, training of prehospital care providers often takes place during the real situation, with the patient as the object for the learning process. Such training could instead be carried out in the context of simulation, out of danger for both patients and personnel. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the development and foci of research on simulation in prehospital care practice.MethodsAn integrative literature review were used. “…Even though simulation is a successful tool for the training and development of professional skills [ 19 ] it can never be more than a surrogate of reality. Something else, or rather something more might be needed to support the development and maintenance of competence in the EMS during the first year of practice.…”

“…Similarly, these tiered levels are designed with differentiation in mind to establish a common baseline and then accelerate to higher levels of clinical competency in first responders, regardless of socioeconomic strata. Finally, simulation has been demonstrated as key to emergency medical training, 14 while newer educational pedagogy has even incorporated virtual reality in cost-effective simulation learning. 15 Our program incorporates key elements of simulation education, coupled with massively open online course (MOOC) methods in order to expand the scalability of our training.…”

“…Ensuring that care providers in HEMS have the right skills, experience and training to provide excellent care and take care of the patient's safety may require tailored training and skills maintenance [4]. Many emergency services have incorporated medical simulation as a core element in the training of personnel and crews in critical technical-and nontechnical skills [5][6][7]. However, simulation is resource demanding, both economically and logistically, and implementing effective training programs can be challenging in busy emergency services.…”
