“…Trends from 1927 to 1982 in the proportion of foreigners' marriages with French nationals solemnised in France show an upward trend for all nationalities until 1980, after which those of North Africans have fallen. The rate for Italian men (the highest) has been just over 80% since the early 1980s, suggesting that there may be an upper limit to this process (Munoz-Perez & Tribalat, 1984). This is a limit which, without immigrant reinforcement, will lead to the rapid disappearance of any minorities experiencing such levels of out-marriage, unless they 'capture' the spouses and children.…”

“…Researchers have continually criticized these data, pointing out that they may lead to erroneous conclusions; however, often they have been obliged to use them as well. Until very recently, the rare quantitative analyses on this subject in France have defined intermarriages as cross-national unions (Munoz-Perez/Tribalat 1984;Neyrand/Sili 1997) or as unions between a foreign-born individual and a French native (Borrel/Tavan 2004;Filhon/Varro 2005;INSEE 2005b). The scarcity of studies on intermarriage in addition to the poor quality of data used in said studies are related to the more general problem of quantitative data on immigration in France, and the fact that public statistics institutions have refused to collect detailed data on ethnic origin or, more generally, on ethnicity (Simon 1998).…”
