"Marimbondos": a review on the neotropical swarm-founding polistines.

Abstract: Neotropical swarm-founding polistines, the Epiponini, compose a highly social tribe of vespids which displays several complex social characteristics, such as: intricate nest building, polygyny, swarm reproduction, and the absence of morphology caste discontinuities, a trait that would not be expected for a highly eusocial group. The biology of Epiponini will be reviewed, evidencing the scarcity of information for this group and also that not all social insects might fit in traditional theories for the evolutio… Show more

“…sylveirae , only a few individuals of the colonies are reproductive. After a swarm, colonies start with several queens and workers, and as the colony develops, some queens disappear or adopt a worker role, and the number of queens reduces until one or a few queens remain [ 17 ]. Carvalho [ 101 ] also found a high value of Hd and a low π for Angiopolybia pallens and Synoeca surinama , two species of paper wasps in the same tribe as Protonectarina .…”

“…Swarm-founding wasps of the Epiponini compose an interesting social tribe of vespids, presenting both complex social characteristics (intricate nest building, polygyny and swarm reproduction) and uncommon traits for a eusocial group, such as castes with the same or with a very similar morphology [ 16 , 17 ]. As the name suggests, these wasps initiate their colonies by swarms, with one or more queens accompanied by a group of workers [ 17 , 18 ]. As a social insect, the effective population size of P .…”

“…Except for Ropalidiini, the other tribes are represented in Brazil. Polistes Latreille, Mischocyttarus de Saussure, and the 19 genera of Epiponini compose the Brazilian fauna of wasps, totalizing about 300 species, of which 104 are endemic (Carpenter and Marques 2001;Carpenter 2004;Noll 2013). The states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Bahia concentrate more than half of all social wasp surveys carried out in Brazil to date (Barbosa et al 2016).…”
