Abstract:Phytoplankton produce a diversity of secondary metabolites that have deleterious effects on other organisms. Some of the most potent of these toxins affect neuronal function in animals. These algal neurotoxins bind selectively to specific receptors on ion transporters in neuronal cell membranes, altering their function and kinetic behaviour. The outcome of such toxin–transporter interactions is the disruption of cell signalling, leading to neurotoxicity through either excitatory or inhibitory mechanisms. Algal… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
