Marine anticorrosion paints

Abstract: Four paint compositions were prepared, two of them based on vinyl copolymer as a binder and the other contain boiled oil in presence or absence of soluble resin material. Boiled oil based paints meet the most anticorrosion action and film property. Also, the anticorrosion potential of the paints depend on the type of ingredients and their ratio in the dry paint films.

“…The protection of these two binders against biofouling by phytoplankton has not been tested in our local waters. Phytoplankton and its constituent species in Alexandria Harbour water varies according to the water conditions (Zaghlour et al, 1990 and1991). Phytoplankton species are greatly affected by nutrient salts, particularly phosphate and silicate concentrations which lie in the ranges 0-26.4, 0-874 pg 1-1 respectively.…”

“…The protection of both binders against marine corrosion of steel surfaces has been tested (Tadros, 1991). The test showed that linseed oil based paint gave protection to the steel surface for 6 months, while a vinylcopolymer coating in the presence of soluble resin gave a shorter protection.…”

“…These coatings are made up of various formulations. Sometimes inorganic and organic additives are incorporated within the coatings to enhance their corrosion protection (Tadros, 1991).…”

“…Resin powder coatings (acacia gum) have been tested before with paint formulations based on vinylite. This resin (gum), when added to vinyl copolymer with a 1:1 ratio, gives mixed binders which have a direct effect on protection of steel from marine corrosion for a reasonable period (Tadros, 1991).…”
