Marine benthic forms of the Marine Protected Area Capo Caccia-Isola Piana (Sardinia, Italy)

Abstract: The great ecological and economic value of the biocenoses of Marine Protected Area 'Capo Caccia-Isola Piana' (MPA) requires a constant monitoring. For this reason, a continuous study of the area producing overlapping maps useful to control in real time the evolution of the biocenoses is necessary. The integrated use of several methodologies, such as Side Scan Sonar, Remote Operating Vehicle and Drone, has allowed us to realize a very detailed map. This paper presents the marine benthic map of the MPA and compa… Show more

“…The Alghero Bay mapped area has been ideally subdivided into three environmental units (Units 1-3), representing areas with similar biocenotic, sedimentological and morphological conditions and human activities (Figure 2). The adopted subdivision refers to Pérès and Picard (1964) and to the adjacent map of the Marine Protected Area Capo Caccia-Isola Piana (De Luca et al, 2018).…”

“…The Alghero Bay (40°34 ′ N-8°13 ′ E) is located in NW Sardinia (Figure 1(B)) and extends from Capo Galera to Alghero Harbour, it has 14 km of coastline and a sea extension of 1600 ha (Figure 1(C)). To the northwest, it is delimited by the Marine Protect Area of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana (AMP) starting just west of Capo Galera promontory (Figure 1(C)) (De Luca et al, 2018).…”

“…Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are left in their natural state to preserve biodiversity and protected species (De Luca et al, 2018) and play a key role in the promotion of the suitable use of marine resources and ecological conservation (Agardy, 1994). The European Framework and national laws award protection to these particular areas by imposing measures to monitor the environmental status of such areas (e.g.…”
