Marine Demonstration of Alternative Fuels on the Basis of Propulsion Load Sharing for Sustainable Ship Design

Abstract: As the IMO aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships by more than 50% by 2050 compared to 2008, the paradigm of the shipbuilding and shipping industries is changing. The use of carbon-free fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia, is progressing, along with the incorporation of batteries and fuel cells in ships. With the introduction of various propulsion power sources, the application of electric propulsion systems to ships is also expected to accelerate. The verification of reliability and safety is of p… Show more

“…Hydrogen is a clean and zero carbon fuel. One of the practical and effective paths for the shipping industry to achieve low carbon or even zero carbon emissions targets is to adopt fuel-cell powered ships [6]. Among various hydrogen production methods, the electrolysis of water is currently considered the most feasible and promising technology for large-scale, renewable energy-based hydrogen production [7].…”

“…As the global demand for achieving net zero emissions rapidly increases, there is a growing interest in the development of environmentally friendly means of transportation powered by sustainable energy sources. This surge in interest is not only driven by the urgent need to address climate change but is also spurred by the heightened awareness of the detrimental effects of air pollution, including various types of particulate matter, on the deterioration of air quality [1][2][3][4]. This dual concern for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating air pollution has led to a significant shift in the transportation sector towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions.…”
