Marine macroalgal biodiversity of northern Madagascar: morpho-genetic systematics and implications of anthropic impacts for conservation

Abstract: A floristic survey of the marine algal biodiversity of Antsiranana Bay, northern Madagascar, was conducted during November 2018. This represents the first inventory encompassing the three major macroalgal classes (Phaeophyceae, Florideophyceae and Ulvophyceae) for the little-known Malagasy marine flora. Combining morphological and DNA-based approaches, we report from our collection a total of 110 species from northern Madagascar, including 30 species of Phaeophyceae, 50 Florideophyceae and 30 Ulvophyceae. Barc… Show more

“…The increased use of DNA barcoding in floristic studies has allowed for more accurate and rapid diversity assessments than studies based on morpho-anatomical identifications [36,56,[78][79][80][81]. For example, recently 72 new records of algal species, including members of the Corallinales and Peyssonneliales, were reported for four shallow reef sites in northern Madagascar [81]. Similarly, DNA barcoding documented 122 CCRA species from various sites around New Zealand and identified CCRA diversity hot spots around the island [46].…”

“…northern Madagascar (Sherwood et al, 2010;Liu et al, 2018;Manghisi et al, 2019;Vieira et al, 2021), and in comprehensive checklists of seaweeds from Mexico and the Philippines (Lastimoso and Santiañez, 2020;Pedroche and Sentıés, 2020). The comparatively higher CCRA diversity for the small, remote western Pacific island of Guam emphasizes the conservation value of tropical islands as hotspots of marine biodiversity.…”

“…Species richness and diversity Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, has a long coastline of 5603 km and has a high diversity of species (Rahelivao et al 2015;Vieira et al 2021). Mattio et al (2015) mentioned a search of Algaebase giving a total of 329 species for this country.…”
