Marker Aided Incorporation of Saltol, a Major QTL Associated with Seedling Stage Salt Tolerance, into Oryza sativa ‘Pusa Basmati 1121’

Abstract: Pusa Basmati 1121 (PB1121), an elite Basmati rice cultivar is vulnerable to salinity at seedling stage. A study was undertaken to impart seedling-stage salt tolerance into PB1121 by transferring a quantitative trait locus (QTL), Saltol, using FL478 as donor, through marker assisted backcrossing. Sequence tagged microsatellite site (STMS) marker RM 3412, tightly linked to Saltol was used for foreground selection. Background recovery was estimated using 90 genome-wide STMS markers. Systematic phenotypic selectio… Show more

“…This modified MABB strategy proved to be highly successful and was then on utilised not only for recovering the grain quality but also for other agronomic traits as well. This is a standard protocol in MABB for recovery of the recurrent parent phenome and had been successfully employed in introgressing genes governing resistance to BB and blast diseases and also for QTLs governing salt tolerance in Basmati rice varieties (Singh et al 2012a;Ellur et al 2016a,b;Khanna et al 2015 a,b;Babu et al 2017;Singh et al 2018a;Sagar et al 2018).…”
