Plant height, which is an estimator of vegetative yield, and crown rust tolerance are major criteria for perennial ryegrass breeding. Genetic improvement has been achieved through phenotypic selection but it should be speeded up using marker-assisted selection, especially in this heterozygous species suffering from inbreeding depression. Using connected multiparental populations should increase the diversity studied and could substantially increase the power of quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection. The objective of this study was to detect the best alleles for plant height and rust tolerance among three connected populations derived from elite material by comparing an analysis per parent and a multipopulation connected analysis. For the studied traits, 17 QTL were detected with the analysis per parent while the additive and dominance models of the multipopulation connected analysis made it possible to detect 33 and 21 QTL, respectively. Favorable alleles have been detected in all parents. Only a few dominance effects were detected and they generally had lower values than the additive effects. The additive model of the multipopulation connected analysis was the most powerful as it made it possible to detect most of the QTL identified in the other analyses and 11 additional QTL. Using this model, plant growth QTL and rust tolerance QTL explained up to 19 and 38.6% of phenotypic variance, respectively. This example involving three connected populations is promising for an application on polycross progenies, traditionally used in breeding programs. Indeed, polycross progenies actually are a set of several connected populations.

Vitamin E is a group of lipid-soluble antioxidants, which is indispensable and unable to be biosynthesized by the human body. Sweet corn is one of the most popular vegetables and important vitamin E resource for human. In this study, one common corn line with favorable allele on the InDel7 (deletion) and InDel118 (deletion) sites in the locus of ZmVTE4 (SY999) was introduced as the donor parent line, 4 elite sweet corn lines were selected as the recipient lines. The ZmVTE4 gene was introgressed into 4 sweet corn lines by functional molecular marker assisted selection. Two flanking SSR markers were selected to reduce the linkage drag. Few agronomic traits were investigated in the BC 1 F 1 and BC 2 F 1 generations and some individuals differing from the recurrent parents had been abandoned. The investigation of few agricultural traits showed no difference between the converted lines and their recipient lines. Five selected BC 3 F 2 families per backcross progenies and their recurrent parent lines were sown to measure the content of tocopherols. The quantification showed that the a-tocopherol content of three backcross progenies increased except for M14. The introduction of ZmVTE4 gene also improved the content of ctocopherol and total tocopherols content. The average content of c-tocopherol and total tocopherols content were 29.11 and 36.63 lg/g in the four selected elite sweet corn lines and the average content in the four converted lines were 51.45 and 63.34 lg/g. This result indicated that ZmVTE4 had different expression in the sh 2 genetic background or the non-target genome introgression into the recipient parent lines affecting the content of tocopherols.

Coffea canephora is subject to enormous competitive challenges from other crops, especially for farmer sustainability and consumer requirements. Coffee breeding programs have to focus on specific traits linked to these two key targets, such as quality character, largely depending on the bean's biochemical composition and field yield. Two segregating populations A and B, from crosses between a hybrid (Congolese×Guinean) FRT58 parental clone and a Congolese FRT51 genotype and between two Congolese parents FRT67 and FRT51, respectively, were used to characterize the quantitative trait loci (QTL) involved in agronomic and biochemical traits. A consensus genetic map was established using 249 SSRs covering 1,201 cM. Three QTL detection models per population with MapQTL (model I) and MCQTL (model II) followed by a connected population approach with MCQTL (model III) were compared based on their efficiency, precision for QTL detection, and their genetic effect assessment (additive, dominance, and parental-favorable allele). The analysis detected a total of 143 QTLs, 60 of which were shared between the three models; 28 found with two models; and two, 13, and 40 specific from models I, II, and III, respectively. The last model III based on connected populations is much more efficient in detecting QTLs with low variance explained and led to the genetic characterization of favorable allele. Thanks to this comparison of three QTL detection models on our quantitative genetic study, we will give a new insight for coffee breeding programs dedicated to managing complex agronomic or qualitative traits.
