Marker Profiling of Botanicals Used for Hepatoprotection in Indian System of Medicine

Abstract: JQuality control of botanicals, including phytomedicines and dietary supplements, is a basic requirement to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of marker components is a potentially cost-efficient aspect of quality control as any change in quality of the marker compound may also represent the quality of overall product, which would also directly aflect the other phytoconstituents of the product. Our studies attempted to develop the marker profile of Andrographis panicula… Show more

“…Methanolic extract of P. amarus and standard phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin were developed in the chromatographic conditions. They showed the presence of standard phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin at R f 0.3 and 0.4 respectively, by densitometric scanning at 254 nm (Mukherjee et al, 2006). Separation of phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin was carried out on silica gel 60F 254 layers eluted with hexane:acetone:ethyl acetate (74:12:8), and the analytes were visualised through colour development with vanillin in concentrated sulfuric acid and ethanol.…”

“…The repeatability of the method was checked by repeated scanning of the same spot of berberine (32 ng) and gallic acid (400 ng) seven times and was expressed as coefficient of variance (% CV). Variability of the method was studied by analysing aliquots of standard solution of berberine (16,40, 64 ng/ spot) and gallic acid (400, 800, 1200 ng/spot) on the same day (intraday precision) and on different days (interday precision) and the results were expressed as % CV.…”

“…dioica was reported as a hepatoprotective agent in ferrous sulphate (FeSO 4 ) intoxicated rats. [16] Polyherbal formulations have synergistic potentiative agonistic/antagonistic pharmacological agents within themselves, which work together in a dynamic way to produce therapeutic efficacy with minimum side effects.…”
