Marriage Systems, Evolution of

Abstract: A marriage system is the set of rules and norms that regulate reproduction in a given human society. This article provides an overview of key concepts and general themes in the study of their evolution. The focus is on the number of spouses allowed (i.e., whether marriage is monogamous or polygamous), and the social and ecological factors associated with this aspect of the marriage system.
