“…The development of a specific Critique of the Political Economy of the Media as part of Media and Communication Studies is not a branch of Economics, but about the adequate application and further development of Critical Political Economy approaches available in Political Science, Legal Studies, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, and Psychology. The theoretical-empirical basis of such an approach is Marx's Critique of Political Economy that can be found in the Marx-Engels-Werke (MEW) (Marx 1962(Marx [1867(Marx , 1890 {English version : Marx [1867: Marx , 1890; Marx 1989 {English version: Marx 1991}; Marx 2009Marx [1863Marx -1865 {English version : Marx [1863: Marx -1865}; {English version: Marx 2010 [1847|}; Marx and Engels 1990[1845/1846 (Hoff 2006;Reichelt 2008) and "Western Marxism" (Behrens and Hafner 2017;Elbe 2008). These approaches are based in part on the new historical-critical Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA²) (Hecker 2018).…”

“…However, there is one major problem with these critiques of the commodity-form: all three regard the commodity-form and its analyses in Marx’s Capital as a direct exchange of commodities . The problem points to what is probably the critical core of the ‘Neue Marx-Lektüre’ (hereafter cited as NM-L) in Germany, which originated around 1968 in the work of Hans-Georg Backhaus (1997), Helmut Reichelt (1971) and Hans-Jürgen Krahl (1971), but also in the work of a lot of others, especially research groups (Marx-Arbeitsgruppe Historiker, 1972; Projektgruppe Entwicklung des Marxschen Systems, 1973; Projektgruppe zur Kritik der politischen Ökonomie, 1973; Lenk, 1972; for an overview see Elbe, 2008). The first generation of the NM-L could be understood as the ‘unofficial’ second generation of Critical Theory 3 and brought about a change in how to criticize commodity-formed mediation in general and how to read Marx’s value-form analysis in particular, thereby founding a new paradigm of interpretation.…”
