Mass independent textures and symmetry

Abstract: A mass-independent texture is a set of linear relations of the fermion mass-matrix elements which imposes no constraint on the fermionic masses nor the Majorana phases. Magic and 2-3 symmetries are examples. We discuss the general construction and the properties of these textures, as well as their relation to the quark and neutrino mixing matrices. Such a texture may be regarded as a symmetry, whose unitary generators of the symmetry group can be explicitly constructed. In particular, the symmetries connected … Show more

“…1 C. S. Lam has shown [14] that the column vectors of the lepton mixing matrix can be eigenvectors of certain horizontal flavor symmetry. Keeping the symmetry point of view, we can construct the M(T)BM parameterizations of the neutrino mixing matrix by appropriately multiplying either tri-bimaximal or bimaximal mixing matrix by a unitary matrix while keeping a column or a row vector characterizing the horizontal symmetry unchanged.…”

“…Our approach is a combination of two very different approaches to lepton flavor: (a) texture-zeros that increase predictivity and relate mixing angles with masses [26][27][28][29][30] and (b) symmetries that fully or partly determine the mixing structure independently of the masses [10,11,31]. The former usually requires abelian symmetries [32] while the latter requires nonabelian discrete symmetries [10,11].…”
