Mass Rearing of Mealybug Predator, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on two Mealybug Species, Planococcus minor and Pseudococcus viburni

Abstract: Mealybug predator, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is an effective biocontrol agent against various species of mealybugs. This study was aimed to develop a protocol for mass production of C. montrouzieri with the aid of two mealybug host species; Planococcus minor and Pseudococcus viburni, under laboratory conditions. The predator was reared on P. minor and P. viburni, using two substrates; local pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) and Malaysian pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima). The incubatio… Show more

“…Colonies of mealybugs and predators were maintained under laboratory conditions at 26 ± 2 °C, 65-85% relative humidity. C. montrouzieri was reared on Pseudococcus viburni (Pseudococcidae) infested fruits of Cucurbita moschata (pumpkin) according to the method described by Gunawardana and Hemachandra (2020). The ovisacs of PMB required for the experiments were obtained from cultures maintained on potato sprouts (Solanum tuberosum L.) following the method described by Nisha and Kennedy (2017).…”

“…Additionally, recent research has shown that it is simple to mass rear the mealybug predator C. montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on several types of mealybugs (Gunawardana and Hemachandra, 2020). P. viburni and P. minor were grown on pumpkins.…”
