Mass Spectrometry-based Lipidomics and Its Application toBiomedical Research

Abstract: Lipidomics, a branch of metabolomics, is the large-scale study of pathways and networks of all cellular lipids in biological systems such as cells, tissues or organisms. The recent advance in mass spectrometry technologies have enabled more comprehensive lipid profiling in the biological samples. In this review, we compared four representative lipid profiling technoligies including GC-MS, LC-MS, direct infusion-MS and imaging-MS. We also summarized representative lipid database, and further discussed the appli… Show more

“…Recent studies demonstrate the feasibility of mass spectrometry-based lipidomics as a tool to identify and quantitate circulating bioactive lipids in biofluids of healthy and diseased patients [29]. Because bioactive lipids are emerging as signature molecules of development and progression of many diseases [17, 18, 29], in the near future lipidomics could become a standard clinical diagnostic tool in molecular medicine.…”

“…The knowledge about functional outcomes of affected metabolic composition of the brain is extensive in terms of neurotransmitters but scarce for the other aforementioned groups of metabolites. Remarkably, the role of brain lipid composition has been considered to influence the brain homeostasis [15][16][17]. However, it is not validated how the brain metabolites are affected by exercise.…”

“…In addition, the metabolism of lipid compounds is also strongly related to diabetes, liver cancer and breast cancer. 10 In 2003, the concept of lipidomics was put forward by scholars, which is a comprehensive description of the species and biological function of lipid molecules. 11,12 As the emerging and most important branch of metabolomics related to human health, lipidomic identication and quantication in living organisms have provided a new chance to better understand the functional role of various lipids in disease development.…”
