Mass Transfer Modeling of SO2 into Large Water Drops

Abstract: This article concerns the modeling of the SO 2 absorption and desorption by falling drops through air with low to high concentration of sulfur dioxide. In the liquid phase, a model based on local scales, interfacial liquid friction velocity and drop size diameter is used. In the continuous gas phase a more classical model is applied. Data obtained by the modeling of the SO 2 absorption and desorption by a single water drop are compared to published experimental results and a fairly good correspondence was foun… Show more

“…Similar results were also obtained using aqueous solutions that were made highly acidic with SO 2 . Under low pH conditions, the uptake of SO 2 into the bulk solution should be significantly lowered, because the formation of HSO 3 – is unfavorable. , Hence, these pH studies provide us with a mechanism for removing the ambiguity of previous results, while also elucidating the surface behavior upon inhibiting the reactive channel following uptake.…”

“…Surface species were first invoked to explain discrepancies between mass accommodation measurements and uptake rates calculated from predicted SO 2 solubility and bulk chemistry. Unpredictably high measured SO 2 uptake rates were attributed to surface intermediaries that facilitate gas uptake to water. , In bulk water, SO 2 forms a gas hydrate structure with approximately seven water molecules . This number is expected to be lower at the surface, but the nature of the surface complexes is not well understood.…”

“…Liquid-phasecontrolled mass transfer was studied by Amokrane and Caussade (1999) and Chen (2001), among others. Mass transfer controlled by both phases was analyzed by Walcek and Pruppacher (1984), Alexandrova et al (2004), Chen (2004), Elperin and Fominykh (2005), and Elperin et al (2007Elperin et al ( , 2008.…”
