Mass Transport Optimization for Redox Flow Battery Design

Abstract: The world is moving to the next phase of the energy transition with high penetrations of renewable energy. Flexible and scalable redox flow battery (RFB) technology is expected to play an important role in ensuring electricity network security and reliability. Innovations continue to enhance their value by reducing parasitic losses and maximizing available energy over broader operating conditions. Simulations of vanadium redox flow battery (VRB/VRFB) cells were conducted using a validated COMSOL Multiphysics m… Show more

“…The bipolar plate combines these properties, as it plays both a fluidic and an electrodynamic role, serving as a reaction surface and turbulence inducer [170]. For this, several different technical approaches have been developed, e.g., turbulent flow-through electrodes [171], "piece of pie" cell configuration [172], static mixer electrodes [173], and zero-gap cell designs [18,174]. However, the majority of research-scale RFB cell setups operate with the zero-gap approach.…”

“…Air or an inert gas, such as nitrogen, bubbled through the solution would simultaneously represent hydrogen and oxygen gas production from electrolysis. Battery modules, in a design suggestive of common household batteries [87], installed in locations such as car parks where solar PV panels are visible [88] would highlight the benefits of EV-to-grid technology for the hospital and the public. Figures 7 and 8 illustrate this design concept.…”

“…These designs aim to enhance velocity from the inlet to the outlet, thereby improving mass transport within the cell. Gurieff et al [ 48 ] also investigated the combination of static mixers within wedge‐shaped cells to improve performance. They found a design with a 12% lower pressure drop.…”
