Masseter and temporalis muscle electromyography findings after lower third molar extraction

Abstract: BackgroundThe main clinical application of electromyography is to detect abnormalities in muscle function, to assess muscle activity for purposes of recruitment, and in the biomechanics of movement.ObjectivesTo analyze electromyography (EMG) findings for masticatory muscles during chewing following surgical extraction of lower third molars, and to determine any correlation between pain, inflammation, trismus, and the EMG data registered.Material and MethodsThis prospective study included 31 patients. Surface E… Show more

“…Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a noninvasive technique used to analyze the function of the masticatory muscles which, being located in a superficial position, are easily accessible using surface electrodes [14,15]. This exam is painless and innocuous [16].…”

“…Moreover, direct muscle damage and acute inflammation may provoke adjacent muscle spasms and lead to limited mouth opening. 24 Finally, trismusprovoked dysphagia is also a frequent undesired effect of third molar surgery, which negatively affects patient' s quality of life by limiting conventional eating and requiring unpleasant soft or liquid diets. 25 Flap effect over tissue healing Healing is often not reported as a clinical parameter after third molar surgery; however, the few articles analyzing healing showed better healing in patients treated with the MTF approach.…”
