Massive recurring angiomyxoma of the scrotum in a obese man

Abstract: Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare mesenchymal benign myxoid tumor, characterized by locally infiltrative nature and high recurrence rate. AAM occurs almost exclusively in adult females, arising from the soft tissue of the pelvic region: to our knowledge, only 43 cases occurring in men have been reported. We report a case of massive recurrence of scrotal AAM in a 46-year-old obese man, who already underwent surgery for the same disease in 2004 and 2005. The mass had a circumference of 106 cm and weighted 3… Show more

“…Soft tissue myxomas consist of five entities: intramuscular myxomas, juxta‐articular myxomas, superficial angiomyxomas, aggressive angiomyxomas and myxoid neurothekeomas . SAM are distinguished from aggressive (recurrent, infiltrative, deep) angiomyxomas, which affect the genital region, are more common in females and are positive for steroid hormone receptors . Clinically, SAM presents as a skin nodule or polypoid lesion less than 5 cm in size and is located most commonly on the trunk or lower limbs, followed by the head and neck, and least commonly on the upper limbs .…”

“…Rocco et al reported a case of massive recurring angiomyxoma of the scrotum obscuring the penis, in an obese man, which was managed by scrotal resection, bilateral orchidopexy and transposition of the penis. The patient soon developed a recurrence that involved the external meatus 1 . This was the only case reported so far with urethral involvement.…”

“…This tumor had a prominent angiomatous component, characterized by large thick walled vessels without arborization. Later reports attribute this tumor to adult females exclusively, occurring in pelvis, perineum, vulva and buttock 1 . Aggressive angiomyxoma occurs rarely in men and only a very few cases involving the penis and urethra have been reported in the literature so far.…”

“…Due to their aggressive infiltrative nature and frequent recurrence behavior they are referred to as aggressive angiomyxomas or AAMs. They are generally found in the pelvis of adult females [ 2 ] but have been reported in males in very few cases. This work has been reported in line with the SCARE criteria [ 3 ].…”
