Masson's tumor in the ulnar artery

Abstract: A healthy 30-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a pulsatile right forearm mass and numbness of her fourth and fifth fingers. Duplex scan imaging revealed an ulnar artery aneurysm with intramural thrombus. After resection, histopathology revealed intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia, also known as Masson's tumor, a rare but benign vascular neoplasm. Local resection of the tumor with vascular reconstruction is curative and resulted in resolution of her neurologic symptoms. To ou… Show more

“…As a rare disease, IPEH has no distinct or defining radiological appearance, with nonspecific and variable findings again. 14,[30][31][32] Our case highlights the varied appearance of IPEH on ultrasonography. The main role of imaging is to identify vascular lesions, whereby modalities include ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and color Doppler sonography; however, it is difficult to differentiate IPEH from other malignant neoplasms.…”

“…7,19 On Doppler ultrasound, it appears as a hypervascular lesion, whereas on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, it appears as a contrast enhancing homogeneous mass. 7,10 Owing to a lack of consistent and specific radiological findings, microscopic histological diagnosis remains the standard method for diagnosing IPEH. 2,13,18 However, it can be challenging, as IPEH closely resembles angiosarcoma.…”

“… 1 Although the case reported was not related to any predisposing factor, in the literature this lesion is usually related to irradiation and chronic trauma, that may change the venous and arterial flow 3 causing papillary endothelial proliferation. There is no age predilection (ranging from 9 months to 80 years old) and it occurs equally in males and females, but Chang in 2012 6 suggested a female predilection mainly due to the tumor's response to estrogens and progesterone.…”
