Masticatory performance and other oral functions in community-dwelling elderly patients without posterior occlusal support by natural teeth

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate masticatory performance (MP), maximum occlusal force (MOF), maximum tongue pressure (MTP) and oral diadochokinesis (ODK) among community-dwelling elderly patients without posterior occlusal support. Methods: This study enrolled community-dwelling elderly patients (≥65 years old) who belonged to Eichner A, B4, C1, C2, and C3. Each oral function was statistically compared among groups. Correlations between MP and other variables were examined in Eichner B4 and C patients. Results: MP and MOF… Show more

“…As is known from a previous study, MITP declines with age 13 . In addition, MITP is reported to be lower in older people who wear complete dentures than in older dentate people 14 . These previous studies support the results of the present study.…”

“…Eating is the foundation of human life. The ability of older people to eat is supported by a wide variety of factors related to tooth and oral functions, such as the number of teeth present, masticatory strength, swallowing function, and occlusal support 1 . To increase awareness of the importance of oral function in the Japanese population, the concept of oral frailty has been introduced.…”

“…One of the factors that strongly influence the decline of masticatory function is the decrease in the number of teeth. 1,2 In addition to these factors, various other factors such as occlusal force, 3,4 tongue pressure, 5,6 and tongue-lip motor function 7 have been reported to be related to masticatory function. Many of these factors decrease or decline with age, resulting in the decline in masticatory function.…”
