Mastoid Obliteration and Reconstruction: A Review of Techniques and Results

Abstract: The aim of cholesteatoma surgery is to obtain a safe, dry and self-cleaning ear. Several methods have been tried and tested to achieve this goal with varying degrees of success. This article reviews some of the more common methods for mastoid reconstruction and obliteration and their results. Current trends appear to favour a combination of mastoid obliteration and reconstructive techniques, with biologic materials such as muscle flaps and bone chips preferred over non-biologic materials such as hydroxyapatite… Show more

“…These results are compatible with other works. [1][2][3][4][5] Another important point to be mentioned (as regard the use of self-materials) is that it has no reaction, thus (in case of recurrence) no hazards of hidden disease. The proposed technique is readily available, less costly, and economic.…”

“…3 Obliteration is subdivided into 'filler' and 'flap' methods. 4 Filler techniques involve obliteration of the cavity dead space by the use of free grafts or other materials. Several materials have been used to reconstruct the posterior external auditory canal (EAC) as free grafts like cartilage, EAC bone and synthetic materials like silicone, proplast, ionomer cement ceravital and hydroxyl apatite.…”
