Material Selection/Fabrication Issues for Thermoplastic Fiber Placement

Abstract: The Manufacture of Advanced Composite Submarine Structures (MACSS) program is part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) Maritime Systems Technology Office, Advanced Submarine Technology (AST) program. The program is developing the material product forms, processes, and equipment for automated fabrication of lowcost composite submarine structures. These developments will be demonstrated through fabrication and delivery of subscale and fullscale components of the Composite Dry Deck Shelter (CDDS). Th… Show more

“…30 The aromatic polymer composite (APC-2) is the very common trade name used by Cytec for CF/PEEK tapes. APC-2/AS4 was used extensively, 18,24,27,30,35,44 47,56,60 –67,70,75,77 79,82,83,85,91 123 whereas other APC-2 versions were less investigated, such as APC-2/IM6 124,125 and APC-2/lM7. 72,73 Many of these tapes/tows had a narrow width of 6.35 mm (0.25 in).…”

“…Therefore, it became important to develop manufacturing process of composites adapted for a fully automated production line . Automated tape laying (ATL) and automated fiber placement (AFP) are two technics developed for this purpose . These processes use prepregs in which reinforcements are already impregnated with the matrix and possibly prepolymerized to allow easy handling .…”

“…That study concentrated on tape placement and several carbon reinforced thermoplastics were examined including PPS, PEI, PEEK, and PEKK, and a number of cylinders were tested [4][5][6]. Further details of the thermoplastic composite tape placement technique were presented recently [7].…”

“…These have generally been for military applications, so few published details are available, but a special issue of this journal presented results from a US Navy study financed by what was then DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). That study concentrated on tape placement and several carbon reinforced thermoplastics were examined including PPS, PEI, PEEK, and PEKK, and a number of cylinders were tested [4][5][6]. Further details of the thermoplastic composite tape placement technique were presented recently [7].…”
