Materials chemistry and thermodynamics of REBa2Cu3O7−x

Abstract: This review focuses on the materials chemistry and thermodynamics of the REBa2Cu@, (RE = rare earth) series of superconductors. The importance of this basic information for predicting and controlling structure and microstructure of single crystals, thin films, and bulk materials is discussed. Examples of where an understanding of the thermodynamics has led to advances in processing are presented, and future areas of research that are key to the second decade of superconductor processing are highlighted

“…Interestingly for both YBCO:Ag10 and Ag20 samples the second peak (T P2 ) is not visible even under applied fields of as high as up to 13Tesla, see figures 3(a) and (b). It seems as if the YBCO:Ag composite sample are like single domain and the inter grain transition is not visible [13,14]. It seems that the granular peak is disappeared on addition of Ag in YBCO.…”

“…Some of the groups reported the a-c-a-axis transition with decreasing growth temperature for both the temperature regions, above the peritectic temperature (T p ) and below T p , that is inconsistent with occurrence of the a-caxis transition in a lower temperature range, below T p , reported by the others. A possible reason for the discrepancy should be related with the use of Y-ZrO 2 (YSZ) crucible, which would react with solvent and then form the sand-like BaZrO 3 (BZO) grains [15][16][17]. The formation of BZO eventually led to high solution viscosity and low solute diffusion, which is equivalent to a low supersaturation.…”

“…More recently, second-generation high-T c superconductor (HTS) tapes (also called HTS coated conductors) deposited on flexible coatedconductors have received much attention [7][8][9][10][11]. Secondgeneration superconductors are based on Ba 2 YCu 3 O 6+z and Ba 2 RCu 3 O 6+z materials (R = lanthanide-substituted variants) [12][13][14][15]. The Ba 2 YCu 3 O 6+z and Ba 2 RCu 3 O 6+z materials are relatively more isotropic when compared with BSCCO-based superconductors, and can retain current-carrying ability at liquid nitrogen temperature under high magnetic fields.…”
