Materials for the revision of the family Caristiidae (Perciformes). 2. Manefishes from the East Atlantic (Redescription of Platyberyx opalescens Zugmayer and description of two new species Platyberyx mauli sp. n. and Caristius andriashevi sp. n.)

Abstract: Manefishes (Caristiidae) of the East Atlantic are described. The validity of the genus Platyberyx is supported and its differences from the genus Caristius are described using characters that have not been applied before (e.g., dentation on the jaws and roof of the oral cavity). The redescription of the type species Platyberyx opalescens is given based on the material from the coastal zones of Morocco and Mauritania; the neotype of this species is established. Based on studied material and analysis of the lite… Show more

“…In the eastern Pacific region four species of manefish have been formerly recorded: Caristius macropus (Bellotti, 1903) from the Bering Sea, and the west coast of Canada down to California; Paracaristius maderensis (Maul, 1949), from the California Current region and the Colombian coasts; Paracaristius nudarcus Stevenson & Kenaley, 2011 from off California and the Central Eastern Pacific; and Platyberyx andriashevi (Kukuev et al, 2012), a single record from off California, San Pedro Basin (Moser, 1996;Beltrán-León & Ríos, 2000;Trunov et al, 2006;Stevenson & Kenaley, 2011. Notably, most records of Paracaristius maderensis in eastern Pacific waters are on the basis of juvenile specimens (Moser, 1996;Beltrán-León & Ríos, 2000;Jiménez-Rosenberg et al, 2010), and only two adult specimens have been previously recorded from this region (see Trunov et al, 2006 for detailed localities).…”

“…Studies on the taxonomy and distribution of caristiids were historically scarce and fragmented. However, a series of taxonomic revisions has been recently conducted (Kukuev et al, 2012(Kukuev et al, , 2013Stevenson & Kenaley, 2011 and the knowledge on the taxonomy and the distribution patterns was significantly improved. The family Caristiidae is currently divided into two distinctly pronounced groups: Paracaristiinae and Caristiinae.…”

“…Paracaristius maderensis (Maul, 1949) -No common name; kl Platyberyx mauli Kukuev, Parin & Trunov, 2012 -No common name; According to Kukuev et al (2012), the specimen described by Maul in 1949 as Platyberyx opalescens Zugmayer, 1911 concerns P. mauli. The latter differs from P. opalescens in the structure of a branchial apparatus (morphology and number of gill rakers and more numerous teeth on the vomer) and body proportions (body depth, eye diameter, head length and position of the pelvic fins).…”

Zugmayer, 1911 -No common name;Aiaj, kl According to Kukuev et al (2012), reliable catches of P. opalescens are known from Portugal to northern Mauritania and suggest that the range of the species includes the near-bottom waters of the continental slope (bathial-pelagic ichthyocene) of the East Atlantic. According to Santos et al (1997), the presence of this species off the Azores is based on the identification of a 63 mm specimen caught by the R/V "Michael Sars" at 29.7833º W,36.8833º N (St. 56).…”
